NAMAVI COMMUNITIES DEMAND IMPROVED SCHOOL BLOCK IN MANGOCHI

Realizing that education is a powerful tool for breaking the cycle of poverty and supporting child development, communities from the area of Traditional Authority (TA) Namavi (Lutende Constituency) in Mangochi recently demanded an improved constructions of a school block for Timbwiti Junior Primary School.

Members of the Area Development Committee (ADC) and Village Development Committee (VDC) said the decision was arrived at after local communities rejected the K10 million Constituency Development Fund (CDF)-built structure because it was done poorly.

“The communities rejected the first block because it was done poorly and posed security threat to learners (children). We recommended a re-construction by the contractor in order to save the situation,” said a member of the ADC.

With support from the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), CSAT is currently implementing a project called ‘Strengthening Governance Accountability Through Citizen Oversight’, which is creating a vigilant communities with an amplified voice that holds duty bearers accountable to enhance improved public service delivery in local councils.

“We are now able to demand improved service delivery from public officers and service providers because we now realize that it is our entitlement, as members of the community, to have quality and durable development which can last longer and improve our lives,” said the chairperson of Namavi ADC.
